Welcome to Reschooling America. This is a website and, we hope, a conversation many years in the making. We aim to provide helpful and encouraging guidance to school leaders and teachers, to homeschoolers, and to self-motivated autodidacts pursuing a classical, liberal education--an education that prepares young people to flourish in the world as thoughtful, virtuous human beings and citizens.
Dr. Terrence O. Moore is a noted teacher, school reformer, and author. Growing up in Texas, he earned a B.A. in history from The University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in history from The University of Edinburgh. He served as a lieutenant in the U. S. Marine Corps from 1990-1993. Dr. Moore taught at Ashland University for two years. From 2001-2008, he served as the founding principal of Ridgeview Classical Schools in Fort Collins, which was one of the leading classical schools in the nation whose high school was ranked first in Colorado for several years and in the top-five by U.S. News and World Report. From 2008-2014 he was a professor of history at Hillsdale College where he helped launch the Barney Charter School Initiative. From 2014 to 2017 he served as the founding principal of the Atlanta Classical Academy and from 2018-2019 the founding principal of Ascent Classical Academy. He was a leading critic of the Common Core, testifying before seven state legislative bodies and writing The Story-Killers: A Common-Sense Case Against the Common Core. He has written extensively on education, politics, and moral culture.
Mrs. Jennifer Moore, née Zahn, grew up in Tiffin, Ohio. She was an Ashbrook Scholar at Ashland University, where she graduated with a major in political science and a minor in literature. Mrs. Moore taught literature and history at Ridgeview Classical for four and 3/4 years until having her first child. While living in the midwest, she home-schooled her first two children. She resumed her teaching career at Ascent Classical Academy as the middle-school history teacher and currently teaches middle-school history and literature at Aristoi Classical Academy.
We shall provide at least three resources for teachers and parents. The first is this website. In the start-up phase, we shall not be able to canvass all books and assignments for all grades, K-12. Nonetheless, soon we shall be able to provide an overarching view of the curriculum, guidance on how to teach certain books and subjects, and daily work on the fundamentals, particularly in language. Please see our philosophy and curriculum pages (forthcoming) to gain an overview of our model of an American Classical Education for Modern Times.
In addition to the website, we shall host a collection of videos on youtube. These videos will be, for the most part, lectures and discussions on history, literature, and philosophy. We also aim to add practical advice on a host of other matters and some occasional levity as well.
We shall also offer books and other written materials that serve as guides to teaching parts of the classical curriculum, or as enjoyable stories in their own right. Stay tuned. Valē.
